Modest Summer Outfits: How Do You Dress Modestly in the Summer?

, 3 min reading time

Modest dressing means different things to different people; this blog addresses the gamut. For a fundamentalist Islamic, modest dress probably means a woman wearing a burqa in public. For a moderate Christian, dressing modestly probably means nothing with a low-cut bodice or too tightly fitted. For an agnostic individual, a modest mode of dress comes from personal choice and style and might mean jeans or slacks with t-shirts.

Modest Summer Fabrics

Beating the heat tops your summer goals, so look for 100 percent cotton or silk clothing. Consider cotton-polyester blends of 50/50 percentages, too. Each of these options provides a breathable fabric that lets the body cool itself. When you need a dressier office look, add a linen blazer.

Dressing for School or Office

Many individuals attend summer school, both at the high school and college level. This can allow them to catch up on missed material or get ahead, but it adds to their clothing budget since what you would wear around the house doesn't provide the appropriate look for school.

Pants

Instead of sweats or shorts, opt for loose jeans or slacks. Wait. Skinny jeans remain the fashion. Skinny jeans don't let air circulate, though, and you'll feel miserable in the heat in them. Try a looser fit like boot-cut jeans or flares.

Tops

Pair your pants with a short-sleeved shirt in a solid color or print that blends with the pants or jeans. Opt for a boat neck or crew neck for the best modest results.

Skirts and Dresses

Choose shift dresses that billow or hang straight. A t-shirt dress, as do polo dresses, offers lengths to the mid-calf or ankle. These stylish options cover most of your body in one piece and pair perfectly with canvas sneakers. That makes them ideal for school and running errands.

Maxi dresses come in a number of styles and reach the ankles. Midi dresses reach mid-calf. Pair either with light cotton leggings or footless tights for full coverage that lets you beat the heat.

After Hours and Weekends

Trade your more formal looks for shorts, but not short shorts. Skip the Nair commercial and choose shorts with at least a five-inch inseam. That minimum inseam hits about two inches above the knee on most women.

If that still seems too short, opt for longer shorts, such as walking shorts, culottes, or pedal pushers. These all fall at or below the knee. Each option works well with flats or sneakers.

Wear your favorite t-shirts or short-sleeved tops with these shorts and shorter pants. If you need to cover more skin, consider footless cotton tights or leggings in nude or a color to match your shirt under the shorts. Layering can save your outfit and keep your parents happy.

Opt for Summer Headcovers

Some individuals opt for modest dressing for religious reasons. This includes some members of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. In summer, choose a headcover, such as a hijab, made of 100 percent cotton so your head remains cool. Cotton wicks sweat away from the body, so your body can cool itself in the heat. Top your usual headcover with a cute baseball cap or sun hat for a fashionable look that remains modest.
